He got deployed to Vietnam with 2nd Platoon and SEAL Team Two in January 1967. Richard led his team in an assault on Ilo Ilo Hon on May 18, 1967, where they destroyed six of the sampans and killed many Viet Cong.

This was called the most successful SEAL operation by the US Navy, and he got awarded a Silver Star, four Bronze Stars, and a Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

Before his death, Richard was the CEO of Red Cell International and previously worked at SOS Temps, Inc.
