The (near enough) 24 best players in the world do battle in Milton Keynes Who will go all the way?

Now 2022 has fully clicked into gear and the World Championship becomes a warm and fading memory, its time to look forward to a potential watershed 12 months of Darts. Will we get a new number one? A first time major winner? Will some megastars continue to slip and some unknowns break through to the elite?

If the Worlds is anything to go by, the answer is complicated. But with the Masters featuring the top 24 ranked players (minus Aspinall and Noppert, adding Whitlock and Petersen), youd expect to see the usual names at the end, especially with the top eight players receiving a bye to the second round.

The Dutchman is a five-time winner of this event and will be itching to get going and put hisAnnus Horribilisof 2021 behind him. Remember he didnt actually lose at the Worlds and to be honest a lot of his defeats, especially in the backend of the year, were purely down to his doubling. He averaged over 100 in the Players Championship, but lost to Peter Wright; almost 98 in the Grand Slam, but lost to Michael Smith.

Hopefully the forced time off will have benefitted Van Gerwen, and you know hell be itching to get a TV win straight away. Last year was the first time since 2011 that he hadnt won at least one TV tournament. The draw sees Humphries or Petersen first up before Anderson and Wright coming into focus. But we all know he has the game to beat anyone; this weekend is the place to start.

As the concentration of quality and seeding system puts me off going for an each-way shot, Ill complement MVGs selection with someone on the other side of the draw. And as my eye glances over the names, it stops at one The current holder of the title.

JONNY CLAYTON really didnt do anything wrong at the Worlds. He just happened to run into a man in the form of his career in Michael Smith. Whenever the odds come out for a tournament hes pretty much always the fourth favourite behind Price, MVG and Wright. Theres a reason for this Outside of the World Matchplay and UK Open last year (where both opponents averaged 100+), he made the quarters or better in every TV tournament from the Masters onwards.

Make no mistake, hes stilltheform player and his new found standard of performance hasnt dipped once on stage since lifting this trophy 12 months ago. I understand the clamour to back Price and Wright but Price at 7/2 seems very short considering he has never made the final here before. And Wright could well suffer a post Worlds hangover. While he did win this tournament last time after tasting Ally Pally glory in 2020, he then went in the tank with early exits in the Matchplay, Grand Prix and UK Open. If that form comes earlier this time around, he could be in trouble.

So the Welshman at his price is always dangerous and until he shows any sign of slowing down, should always be respected in the market. Time for a top weekend in Milton Keynes!
