The Playstation 2 is an impressive machine, and it is too soon to tell whether it will revolutionize the video game industry or destroy it. Playstation, a division of Sony, is clearly aware of the potential innovation to come from the PS2. ”We envision the Playstation 2 as the foundation of a multimedia entertainment system,” the company says in its promotional literature. ”The power of the PS2 will unleash a new era in interactive entertainment.”
Sony’s emphasis is well placed. The PS2 can play DVDs, CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs; it plays DVDs and CDs via the DVD player and CD player built into it; it plays CD audio via FM, AM, or car stereos; it plays standard audio CDs, MP3 CDs, and Audio CDs via AC/3; it supports MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and WMV media; and it has networking capabilities.
But the most powerful feature of the PS2 is its ability to play digital video. The PS2 has two analog video connectors, component and composite, and a digital video connector, S-Video. PlayStation gameplay is fun but not terribly creative. Some games are more creative than others. For example, the arcade game Crazy Taxi is fun to play, but it’s a fairly conventional driving game.
The Grand Theft Auto series–one of the few games that’s fairly similar to Crazy Taxi–is familiar, too, but it’s full of interesting ideas. One, for example, is the tendency to drive close to the ground. When you look down, you can see everything that happens on the street. If you drive along, you miss a lot.
Another is that the game world is not real. By which I mean you don’t have to obey the laws of physics. You can drive around corners at high speeds, or drive off cliffs, or drive into mountains, and the game will detect you and let you keep going.
It’s also interesting that, though the game world is not real, it tries to be realistic in other ways. Every car in the game has weight, and when you crash it, it makes a noise. It also looks realistic, at least on an ordinary TV.
Because of the way the game is set up, the players’ goal is to get from one point to another. So players naturally think of things in terms of getting somewhere–the goal of the game is driving somewhere. The designers of the game understand this. But the game also presents some opportunities to do non-goal related things.
For example, the pedestrians in the game, who can be shot, are not real people. But they are cartoon characters, and the shooting is very realistic.
When a player is shooting, the game gives the visual impression that the pedestrian is being thrown around, and that the shooter is shooting it.
